Ten Vessels, Two Routes, and Six Languages: Winter Passenger Navigation Starts on the Moscow River

On November 14, 2019, in the capital, the summer navigation season on the Moscow River was closed, and, simultaneously, the winter navigation has begun. This winter season crowns the tenth anniversary of navigation. This fact was reported by the Moscow City Tourism Committee.
Десять судов, два маршрута, шесть языков: на Москве-реке открылась зимняя пассажирская навигация

In the winter season, Moscovites and metropolitan visitors will be carried by 10 all-weather ice-class motor vessels with reinforced hulls. Vessels to be operated in winter are able to navigate in conditions of small floes up to 20 cm thick. When the weather is severely cold and the river freezes deeply, it is first to be cleared by icebreakers.

“Today, lots of Moscovites and guests of the capital choose river cruises. New special routes and cruises have been prepared for the milestone season of winter river navigation, that will allow Moscovites and tourists to experience the full range of brilliant impressions. For example, passengers will be able to take part in theatrical journeys, gastronomic cruises and even special New Year's Christmas Tree Trips,” the press service of the Moscow City Tourism Committee noted.

Motor vessels will move along two tourist routes. In 2.5 hours, passengers will be able to observe all the main tourist attractions of the capital: Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow State University, Zaryadye Park and others. In addition, metropolitan visitors will be also able to use the audio guide with descriptions of Moscow attractions in six languages: Russian, English, Chinese, Spanish, French and German.

“Since November 17, 2009, when our first journey was launched, the main task was to kindle the Moscovites and tourists’ interest in a new type of recreation in the winter season, namely sailing along the Moscow River. Indeed, it was the first and unique event of the kind for Moscow. It is also symbolic that the Flotilla started its activity precisely in the winter season. And now, after 10 years straight, winter cruises have already become an essential part of urban recreation and still gaining popularity increasingly,” Olga Tkachyova, the Deputy Head of Strategic Development and Marketing at Flotilla Radisson Royal, said.

Last year, winter passenger navigation along the Moscow River began on November 15. During the winter season last year, more than 200 thousand people were engaged in the activity. Summer navigation this year started on April 24. 10 river buses run along the Moscow River with their bright-colored hulls. Each of them is named after a flower.

In addition to sightseeing routes, themed events on board motor ships are also in demand today. For example, one can enjoy the Moscow "Spring a Cappella International Festival" participants performance, or go on a theater journey, or even watch the fireworks during other city festivals, so everyone can choose a river cruise after his or her heart.
